(Research Assistant Position in Geographic Information Systems (GIS

The UAE Research Center for Renewable Energy Mapping and Assessment at Masdar institute (recrema.masdar.ac.ae) is looking for an enthusiastic person with the skills and experience to be a part of our rapidly expanding research center. The successful candidate is expected to provide help to the Center’s GIS Developer with various GIS activities. The candidate will be a part of a goal driven team working on developing mapping products for assessing renewable energy potential and other Earth Observation products. The successful candidate will be based at Masdar Institute, Abu Dhabi (UAE).
Masdar Institute of Science and Technology (http://www.masdar.ac.ae) is the world’s first graduate-level university dedicated to providing real-world solutions to issues of sustainability. Minimum requirements
Candidates should meet the following:
Bachelor/Master degree in computer science, GIS or any other equivalent qualification
Proven understanding of GIS concepts and theory
Good communication and interpersonal skills
Working knowledge in English
Selection criteria
Candidates will be assessed against the following:
Education background
Extent of experience designing and developing WebGIS applications using open source software
Extent of experience with scripting languages (SQL, JavaScript, python)
Extent of experience working with proprietary and open source GIS software (ArcGIS, QuantumGIS, etc.)
Extent of experience working and administrating geospatial databases
Proven understanding of OGC compliant Web Services (WMS, WFS, etc.) and applications (GeoServer, GeoNetwork, etc.)
Proven understanding working with remote sensing and GIS data
Proven understanding of Web technologies and Spatial Data Infrastructures
Proven understanding of the complex issues surrounding data sharing, interoperability, integration and management of spatial datasets
Recent graduates with solid geospatial knowledge and programming skills are encouraged to apply.
Please note that all candidates should possess computer skills and should be capable of working with people of different national and cultural backgrounds.
The compensation package for this position is very competitive with annual tax-exempt net salary commensurate with experience and education. Additional benefits include: annual two-way airfare to home country, one-time moving allowance, free comprehensive international medical coverage and other components.
